Barcelona confirm signing Luuk de Jong on loan from Sevilla

FC Barcelona confirmed the transfer of attacker Luuk de Jong on season loan from Sevilla with an option to buy. The 31-year-old joins up with the Blaugrana after spending two seasons with Sevilla. Barca will pay Dutch international’s salary this season and have an option to make him a permanent mainstay next summer. His arrival will come following the departure of Lionel Messi and Antoine Griezmann.

“FC Barcelona and Sevilla FC have reached an agreement for the loan of Luuk de Jong until 30 June 2022,” Barca said in a statement. “The Club will pay the player’s wages and have an option to make the deal permanent.”De Jong confirmed the transfer on Twitter, by retweeting FC Barcelona’s announcement. “More than a club. More than an honor. Visca el Barca!” he tweeted.

The 31-year-old De Jong has earned 38 caps for the Dutch national team since making his debut in 2011, and made two appearances for his country at Euro 2020 this summer. He also helped Sevilla to the 2020 Europa League crown and scored 10 goals and 2 assists in 69 LaLiga appearances. De Jong came to La Liga from PSV Eindhoven where he scored 122 goals in just 204 official appearances.

At Barcelona, De Jong will be reunited with his former national team boss Ronald Koeman. He will also play with Martin Braithwaite and Memphis Depay have started each of the club’s first league matches

This announcement came in a Deadline Day where Griezmann rejoined Atlético Madrid from Barcelona on a season’s loan with an option buy for €40m (£34.4m). Barcelona also completed the sale of the right-back Emerson Royal to Tottenham on a five-year deal for €25m and midfielder Ilaix Moriba to RB Leipzig for an initial €16m, with up to €6m to follow.

Earlier, Barcelona’s Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba have agreed to salary reductions to get the new signing Sergio Agüero registered amid financial fair play regulations. Barca president Joan Laporta earlier revealed that Barcelona’s debts stand at 1.35 billion euros ($1.58 billion). Gerard Pique did the same earlier in the summer to allow Depay and former City defender Eric Garcia to be registered,
