Champions League Best Player: Top Goalscorer Crowned; It Isn’t Lewandowski

There is a clear frontrunner in the race to snag the Top Scorer award in the UEFA Champions League awards race. Contrary to everyone’s expectations, though, Robert Lewandowski—previous winner of the Ballon d’Or Striker of the Year—didn’t get it.

The honor, much to the surprise of 12BET Sportsbook players who played the game, belongs to Sebastien Haller. The Ivory Coast national and Ajax player edged out Lewandowski to emerge as this season’s UEFA Champions League top goalscorer.

How Haller Made It

Haller’s actions during Matchday 6 helped him scale the top of the Champions League scoring charts. During their game against Sporting CP, the Ajax forward helped put the team’s foot forward with an early penalty, eventually helping them defeat Sporting CP 4-2 at home.

This makes him the only player besides Cristiano Ronaldo to score a goal in all six group games. The last time the Manchester United forward did this feat was during the 2017/2018 edition of the top-flight European football tournament.

Haller Makes History

This also meant that Haller is repelling Lewandowski at arms’ length on the strength of ten goals, having also become the nth player to make four goals in his Champions League debut. The last player to do this was Marco van Basten, also an Ajax player, who scored in Ajax’s 5-1 victory against the same opponent, Sporting CP.

The Bayern Munich forward, meanwhile, should look forward to making the most out of his remaining games in the competition. Lewandowski is only a goal behind and Barcelona keeping him off his game during their 0-3 loss in their football match against Bayern helped Haller’s case.

All The Top Scorers on The List

Haller joins a list of illustrious gentlemen-athletes as the competition goes off into the Last 16. Barring any changes in the Champions League fixtures, his position should be safe from the seven-goal duo of Leipzig’s Christopher Nkunku and Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah.

Salah added to his tally during their match against AC Milan, which Liverpool won 2-1, while Nkunku didn’t score in their 2-1 win against Manchester City as Leipzig bowed out.
