D-Day: Griezman rejoins Atletico, Mbappe to stay at PSG in deadline day

In one of the most intense Deadline Days in football, a lot of big names in the Europe made a shocking move, with Antoine Griezmann rejoining Atlético Madrid from Barcelona. The move is just the latest big-name transfer following Messi’s Barcelona exit and Cristiano Ronaldo’s return to Manchester United. Meanwhile, Kylian Mbappé is set to stay at Paris Saint-Germain.

Griezmann has rejoined Atlético Madrid from Barcelona on a season’s loan with an option buy for €40m (£34.4m). The 30-year-old forward spent five seasons at Atletico before moving to Barcelona in 2019 where he made 102 appearances, in which he has scored 35 goals and totaled 17 assists. “Welcome back, Griezmann!” the La Liga champions wrote on its website.

The 2018 World Cup winner was one of their highest earners since signing in 2019 for 120 million euros. He saw Atletico win the La Liga title last season, a feat he did not experience during his stint in the club as his only major trophy with Atletico was the 2018 Europa League, having signed for Diego Simeone’s men from Real Sociedad shortly after their surprise 2014 league title triumph.

Barcelona also completed the sale of the right-back Emerson Royal to Tottenham on a five-year deal for €25m and midfielder Ilaix Moriba to RB Leipzig for an initial €16m, with up to €6m to follow. All of these players were sold to reach an agreement with Sevilla to sign Dutch forward Luuk de Jong on a season-long loan deal with the option of a permanent transfer.

Meanwhile, Mbappé is set to stay at Paris Saint-Germain as Real Madrid failed with a €200m deadline-day bid to acquire the French striker. The World Cup winner was desperate to leave PSG in the transfer window after he rejected a record contract from the French giant that would have seen him become the highest-paid player in the world.

According to reports, Real Madrid made a new offer worth €200 million to PSG for the rights to Mbappe but they did not get a response from the French club. The PSG President Nasser al-Khelaifi, was determined to keep the forward and turned down offers of €160m and €170m from Madrid over the past week. However, reports claim that the 22-year-old wants to leave the club.

Mbappe’s current contract at the Parc des Princes expires at the end of the season, which means he will be free to negotiate with Madrid, or any other club, in January. Mbappe has won three league titles during his four years in Paris and finished as Ligue 1’s top scorer three seasons in a row. He netted both goals in PSG’s 2-0 victory versus Reims last weekend, a game in which Messi also made his debut.

Meanwhile, Madrid reportedly completed the acquisition of another French midfielder Eduardo Camavinga from Rennes on a €31 million transfer fee with add-ons that bring the total to €40 million. The midfielder, who is the youngest player since 1932 to be called up by France, shot to worldwide fame with his performances in Ligue 1 and Madrid
