The last time Osaka was ranked outside the top 10 was in August 2018, when she was 19th. This season, she pulled out of the French Open in May and withdrew at Wimbledon in July and then lost in the third round of the U.S. Open to unseeded Canadian teen Leylah Fernandez. She ended her season after the U.S. Open announced that she planned on taking a break from tennis “for a while”.

She also withdrew from the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, the last 1000 event on the WTA calendar. In the Tokyo 2020, the four-time Grand Slam champion Osaka, who also lit the ceremony cauldron to start the Games, has been eliminated of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics after losing in straight sets to Marketa Vondrousova of the Czech Republic in the third round.

It was her first competitive tennis match since withdrawing from the French Open in May citing mental health concerns. In a recent interview last week, Osaka made a hint on her return, saying she “kind of” has “that itch again.” Meanwhile. two-time Grand Slam champion Garbine Muguruza propelled to the sixth place after winning the title in Chicago last week.
