Yannick Carrasco and Romelu Lukaku opened the scoring for Belgium before Karim Benzema and Kylian Mbappe struck for an equalizer from behind. Theo, who played alongside his brother Lucas, making them the first two brothers to play for Les Bleus since Herve and Patrick Revelli in 1974, netted his first international goal for France in the 90th minute of his second international appearance.

“Winning that match from where we were proves the strength of character of this team,” France coach Didier Deschamps told a news agency after the game. “Nobody thought it possible at half-time, and I understand that looking at the score, but they were here to not leave anything on the pitch and to play in the final.” Deschamps has been keen on reinventing the World Champions after 9 years at the helm.

Both France and Belgium failed to advance in the final of the Euro 2020. The four finalists reached finals of the biennial European event, previously won by Portugal in the inaugural event in 2019, finishing at the top of their respective groups in League A. Italy and Belgium will try to clinch a top place in the tournament as they meet for the Nations League third-place playoff.

Before this game, Ferran Torres’ brace helped Spain reach the final of the UEFA Nations League after winning against the European Champions Italy 2-1, ending Roberto Mancini’s European trophy haul and record unbeaten run in Milan. Italy had not lost in 37 games prior to their contest against Spain. The second-ever UEFA Nations League Final is due to be played at the San Siro in Milan in Italy.
