Inter Milan clinched its first league title in 11 years that also ends Juventus’s nine-year reign in Italian football. Antonio Conte’s side will lift their 19th Scudetto without playing after nearest rivals Atalanta drew 1-1 at Sassuolo to leave them 13 points clear with four games to spare. The Turin club, meanwhile, are fifth with 66 points, 16 behind Inter at the top of the Serie A table.
“We are, yes, we are. Champions of Italy. We can finally scream it, after dreaming of it, after keeping it hidden in the depths of our hearts, after holding on to it like a precious dream that we did not want to waste,” Inter in a lengthy statement posted on their website. Inter, who won 2-0 at relegated bottom club Crotone on their last matchup, will lift their first crown since the treble-winning 2009-10 season under Jose Mourinho. Goals from Christian Eriksen and Achraf Hakami ensured the three points that got them close to being confirmed champions. They have topped the league standings for the last 13 rounds since beating Lazio 3-1 in February.
Despite finishing bottom of a Champions League group with Real Madrid, Borussia Monchengladbach and Shakhtar Donetsk, Conte, who started Juventus’s record run with the first three titles in a streak under him, bounce back and went unbeaten since January, a run of 18 games, becoming the first Italian side to begin the second half of a Serie A season with 11 consecutive wins.
“We are succeeding in toppling a kingdom that had lasted for nine years,” Inter coach Conte told reporters, referring to his team ending Juve’s Serie A reign. “We’re aware that we can do something extraordinary because Inter haven’t won a Scudetto in 11 years, and we’re breaking up a dynasty.” The Nerazzurri are now second for league trophies in Italy, one ahead of city rivals AC Milan’s 18.
Juventus president Andrea Agnelli congratulated his Inter counterpart Steven Zhang on the Chinese-owned club’s success. “Well done Steven! Happy for you and proud of being your loyal opponent on the pitch and friend off the pitch. We’ll be back,” Agnelli wrote on Twitter. It is the first time that a foreign-owned Italian team has won the league title.
Inter players celebrate the win on their own in a dressing room footage filmed by former Arsenal and Manchester United forward Alexis Sanchez – while fans gathered together in the city centre to celebrate the club’s win. The newly-crowned champions also warned the fans to “celebrate responsibly”. Atalanta, Juventus, and AC Milan rank second to fourth all with 69 points.
