Inter have rejected Chelsea’s bid to acquire striker Romelu Lukaku for €100 million plus Marcos Alonso. The Belgium international has been linked with a return to Stamford Bridge during the summer transfer window after failing to sign Erling Haaland from Dortmund. Lukaku played a key role in Inter winning Serie A last season, scoring 24 goals and registering 11 assists. Follow us for more live football match.
According to reports, the Blues called Lukaku but the 28-year-old striker “politely said no” and “immediately” rejected the offer. Earlier, Lukaku, who previously played in Premier League clubs like Manchester United, Everton and West Brom, has already expressed his intentions to stay at the club that “took him away from his Manchester United nightmare.”
“Yes, I am staying. I’ve already had contact with the man who normally becomes our new manager. Maybe I shouldn’t say that yet… It was a very positive conversation. There’s also the challenge of doing it again (winning the league). I feel good at Inter,” Lukako said in his previous interview. The Nerazzurri are also remained firmed in keeping their star striker despite its current financial difficulties.
With Serie A season set to commence in less than 2 weeks, Inter will have no time to get a replacement for Lukaku in case they accepted the offer as they have already moved some players on with the main one being full-back Achraf Hakimi to PSG for €70m. Losing Lukaku and Hakimi in the same window would be a blow in their attempt to defend their title for the next season.
Meanwhile, Chelsea is currently monitoring Bayern Munich’s Robert Lewandowski and are interested in the bid for Tottenham’s Harry Kane. The English club is in dire need of a power striker after putting Tammy Abraham up for sale and selling Olivier Giroud to Milan. “Two or three (signings) could be very, very good,” Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel said in a previous interview.
“We don’t need another seven and another complete turnover because it’s also our job to keep on improving, because we have still a young squad and it’s not about stealing from them the chance to prove it again, that they are capable of growing and evolving,” Tuchel added. “But, we have some ideas, of course, to make the group stronger, and I think this can always be a positive thing to challenge us.”
