Inter won Italian Super Cup after beating Juventus in extra time

Alexis Sanchez’s goal in the final minute of extra time helped Inter beat rival Juventus 2-1 to clinch the 2021 Italian Super Cup in front of the depleted crowd at San Siro. American midfielder Weston McKennie gave the Old Lady the lead in the first half before Lautaro Martinez had converted a penalty to equalize the scoring. Inter wasted several chances in the opening 10 minutes that the eventual Man of the Match McKennie took advantage of before they finally got a chance to bounce back through Martinez’s equalizer. The game proceeded to extra-time after not much happened in the second period and substitute Sanchez netted a dramatic winner with seconds left to play, following a mistake from Juventus’ defense.

“The more a champion plays, the better he is, and he does things nobody else can do,” the former Arsenal and Manchester United forward Sanchez said after the win. “Today it was like that. I thought I would start because I was in form, I respect the coach but I was hungry to win… I felt like a caged lion.” This silverware is Inter’s sixth Super Cup triumph and their first since 2010.

Meanwhile, this title is first for new Inter coach Simone Inzaghi, who succeeded Antonio Conte last year. He also extended his impressive record against Juventus in the Italian Super Cup, having won both of his previous matches in the competition against the Bianconeri when he was in charge of Lazio in 2017 and 2019. The trophy is being played by the reigning Serie A holder and Italian Cup champions.

Defending champions Juventus, who have a record nine victories in the Italian Super Cup, were without a number of players through injury and suspension. It is learnt that this year is the first time since 2012 that they qualified for the game as Italian Cup winner, beating Atalanta in last season’s Coppa Italia final, instead of league champion after Inter ended their nine successive Serie A titles last season.

Inzaghi’s men are currently on top of the Serie A table, 11 points ahead of the Bianconeri in fifth. Inter will face Atalanta in the weekend league game to keep their standing in the league as second place Milan is only 1 point behind them, while Juventus will face Udinese to bounce back from this loss and propel their standing to secure a spot in the Champions League.
