In a surprise transfer announcement, Manchester United confirmed that has reached an agreement with Juventus to re-sign Cristiano Ronaldo. Ronaldo, who scored 118 goals in 292 games during his first spell at Old Trafford between 2003 and 2009, reportedly completed his medical in Lisbon and he has agreed personal terms on a two-year contract with the Premier League club.
“Manchester United is delighted to confirm that the club has reached agreement with Juventus for the transfer of Cristiano Ronaldo, subject to agreement of personal terms, visa and medical,” Manchester United confirmed in a statement. “Everyone at the club looks forward to welcoming Cristiano back to Manchester.” Follow us for more football predict and football betting tips.
According to reports, Ronaldo will join for a fee of 15 million euros ($17. 7.), with 8 million euros ($9.4m) in add-ons. The transfer is subject to agreement of personal terms, visa and a medical examination. The 36-year-old striker first arrived at United from Sporting Lisbon in 2003 before becoming one of the most valuable strikers in the world, winning the first of his five FIFA world player of the year awards.
The Portugal international, who also won the Euro 2020 Golden Boot, was the top scorer in Serie A for the last two seasons and scored 101 goals in 134 appearances. However, he has never won the Champions League with the Italian side, the trophy that he won with United in 2008 and four times with Madrid. Ronaldo is expected to play his first game when United host Newcastle United on Sept. 11.
The then transfer speculation came after Ronaldo reportedly frustrated about Juventus’ performance during the last season where they exited the Champions League as early as in the last-16 and failed to defend their title despite finishing as top goal-scorer with 29 goals. Juventus finished fourth in the Serie A table and Ronaldo scored 36 goals in 44 appearances for Juve that helped the club lift the Coppa Italia.
Last month, he returned to Italy from his holiday since Portugal’s Euro 2020 defeat to Belgium at the round of 16. The 36-year-old underwent a medical in Turin and joined preseason training ahead of the 2021-22 Serie A season. Since joining the Bianconeri in July 2018, Ronaldo has netted an impressive 101 goals in 133 games and won two Serie A titles, two Italian super cups and one Coppa Italia.
His departure from Juventus was confirmed by coach Massimiliano Allegri, who revealed he was told by the player he had “no intention” of representing the club again. Ronaldo Ronaldo took to Instagram after United’s announcement, saying he gave his “heart and soul for Juventus.” He added: “I’ll always love the city of Turin until my final days.”
