After winning 8 games in a row, Paris Saint-Germain were stunned by Rennes 2-0, ending its perfect start to the new Ligue 1 season. The defeat is PSG’s first in Ligue 1 since April and also Lionel Messi’s first defeat since arriving at the Parisian club. The hosts’ Gaetan Laborde and Flavian Tait scored just before and after the break against the tough opponent. Follow us for more football predictions.

Rennes opened the scoring on 44 minutes when Laborde converted from Kamaldeen Sulemana’s superb cross before Tait added a second with a sweeping finish into the bottom corner. Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe had each had chances during the first half, with Mbappe hit a 67th minute goal only for it to be ruled out for offside by the video assistant referee (VAR).

“We didn’t start the match well but then we played the best 25-30 minutes of the season. It’s a shame we didn’t score. We conceded two goals that were hard to take,” said PSG coach Mauricio Pochettino. “In general, I’m satisfied, we created a lot of chances. Rennes scored with their first and the goal had a big emotional impact,” he added.

Despite dropping its first points of the season, PSG remains top of the table, with six points ahead of second-placed Lens and eight clear of third-placed Nice, which has played one game less. PSG won its opening eight games but needed injury-time goals to edge victories against Lyon and Metz. Rennes move up to seventh placed of the table following the win.

Meanwhile, Bayern Munich have suffered their first league loss at home since 2019 as Eintracht Frankfurt came from behind to stun them with 2-1 win in the Bundesliga. It was Leon Goretzka who broke the deadlock just before the half-hour mark before Kostic drilled a low shot past Manuel Neuer seven minutes from time to hand Frankfurt the win.

In La Liga, Leaders Real Madrid also suffered their first loss this season as they were beaten at Espanyol. Raul de Tomas gave the hosts a 17th-minute lead when he met Adrian Embarba’s low cross into the box before Aleix Vidal added an excellent second, beating Nacho before firing past Thibaut Courtois on the hour mark. Karim Benzema responded for Real with a fine finish but could not find a late equaliser.
