Despite being held to a 2-2 draw by Indonesia in the second leg of the finals, Thailand lifted the AFF Suzuki Cup for the record sixth time at the Singapore National Stadium. The War Elephants thrashed the Garuda 4-0 in the first leg that gave them the advantage in the final that later converted to 6-2 aggregate victory. Ricky Kambuaya scored Indonesia’s opener seven minutes into the second leg followed Adisak Kraisornin’s equalizer in the 54th minute. Thailand then took the lead when Sarach Yooyen’s low effort was turned into the net by defender Asnawi Mangkualam. Indonesia’s Egy Maulana Vikri made it 2-2 with a late effort to give his team the consolation.
“After such a difficult year, football is still a great opportunity to make people happy and I hope this is a New Year gift for all people in Thailand after difficult times,” said Thailand coach Mano Polking. Thailand last lifted the trophy four years ago, including the inaugural AFF Cup in 1996, while Indonesia have never won the title despite appearing in the final for the sixth time.
Earlier, four members of Indonesia’s national team were barred from participating the final for breaching COVID-19 safety measures in Singapore. Tournament Most Valuable Player Chanathip Songkrasin and Thailand captain earlier helped Thailand to set up the win with two goals in the 4-0 thrashing of Indonesia in the opening leg. The competition had been postponed due to the COVID-19.
“I’m so happy that we won but also that we won in a special way,” Polking added. “This is a prestigious tournament and we’re so happy that we won it but we don’t want to stop here and then not have a chance in the World Cup qualifiers or Asian Cup qualifiers. We showed some brilliant moments of football, defended well when we had to and created the most chances in the tournament.”
