Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski was named as Germany’s Footballer of the Year for the second season in a row. The 32-year-old scored 41 goals last season, breaking Gerd Muller’s Bundesliga scoring record, that helped Bayern secure their ninth consecutive German title. He won 356 of 563 votes casted by football writers from the Association of German Sports Journalists.
“I am aware of how big this honour is. It is a reason for great pride and joy for me, because it is rare to win the title of Footballer of the Year in Germany twice in a row,” Lewandowski said. “Of course I am happy that I have scored 41 goals in 29 Bundesliga games. This number of goals fills me with great pride and is certainly a spectacular achievement in view of my injury.”
The Polish international picked up the award for the first time in 2019-20 after his stellar performance. Since joining Bayern in 2014, Lewandowski has scored 203 goals in 219 games. He has netted over 500 goals in total for his clubs and country since starting his career. Voted FIFA’s best male player of 2020, the goal-scoring sensation also won the European Golden Shoe, beating out Messi and Ronaldo.
Lewandowski’s team-mate Thomas Muller of Bayern Munich was 315 votes to clinch the second place, while third place went to Erling Haaland of Borussia Dortmund, who received 38 votes. Meanwhile, Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel was voted Coach of the Year behind Lewandowski’s former coach at Bayern, Hansi Flick. Tuchel led the Blues to Champions League glory after replacing Frank Lampard.
“I accept the award very gratefully — as a great award for the entire team, because I see myself as a team player. Therefore, the personal award is a bit uncomfortable for me. Who wants to decide what the greatest coaching performance is?” Tuchel said. “Football teams can win without the coaches, but coaches cannot win without the team. It’s a reward for the team.”
