UEFA Champions League: Ajax, Liverpool Enter Last 16; PSG Awaits

In recent UEFA Champions League 2021 news, Liverpool bested Atletico Madrid. They made it to the Last 16 from Group B on strength of their 4 wins and no losses. Ajax emulated the EPL side, recording their own best from their group and towing themselves right into the knockout stages.

PSG posted contrasting fortunes, however, when they were held to a draw by RB Leipzig. The Ligue 1 side were without Argentine star Lionel Messi during the game. This made the La Liga and the Eredivisie clubs the only teams to have made it to the Last 16 on the day.

Keeping A Pristine Record

Due to the quality of opponents, it’s quite uncommon for teams to keep their UEFA Champions League results intact but Liverpool and Ajax proved up to the task. Liverpool did it via a 2-0 thrashing of Atletico Madrid, courtesy of goals from Diogo Jota and Sadio Mane. Liverpool are now guaranteed space at the top, while Atletico slid down to third.

Ajax, meanwhile, had to rely on the sterling performance of Sebastien Haller. Even though they faced a shorthanded Borussia Dortmund side missing the services of Erling Haaland, the Dutch club hung on to win 3-1 courtesy of goals from the red-hot Haller, Dusan Tadic, and Davy Klaassen.

Other Results from the Day

Porto and AC Milan also figured in a match, which saw the Serie A side draw the Portuguese team 1-1 on account of an own goal from Chancel Mbemba. Earlier, Luis Diaz opened the goal for Porto, but had no such luck avoiding the misfortune in the soccer arena.

PSG had no such luck as Liverpool or Ajax, though, as Messi missed the trip to Germany on account of an injury. The Ligue 1 team actually had come from behind to lead, before they fell to a late penalty from Dominik Szoboszlai. They settled for a 2-2 draw against RB Leipzig. Despite the draw, Leipzig find themselves eliminated from reaching the knockout stage.
