Trouble is brewing in the third edition of the UEFA Nations League. With the UEFA Nations League draw coming up, the European body is trying to include some teams outside of Europe for more competition possibly. These groups are found in the CONMEBOL federation, well outside of the sphere of influence of the European governing body.
FIFA, however, is trying to block this move, even as they are trying to have both the CONMEBOL and the UEFA come onboard for their biennial World Cup plans. It remains to be seen how they plan to move forward following this plan by the European teams to invite South American teams to the Nations League.
Moving Behind the FIFA’s Back
FIFA was reportedly left out when the UEFA announced its plan to invite South American countries to join in Nations League matches. It will also effectively create different calendars for South American nations as well as divide South America into two parts.
The 211 national federations met yesterday in a virtual meeting hosted by FIFA. This was to make clear the decision of the UEFA to include 10 South American nations in the Nations League, which is set to take effect in 2024.
Taking Things into Account
With this development, the UEFA plans appears to force FIFA into a sort of concession—it is believed they will be doubling down on their plans for a biennial World Cup, supposed to have been discussed in the meet yesterday.
The Confederation of North, Central America, and Caribbean Association football (CONCACAF) and the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) are reportedly opposing the motion. 12BET sportsbook fans could bet on that, but it may have something to do with the players leaving when they are needed the most. Aside from these confederations, teams like Manchester United and Manchester City may oppose the plan too.
What The Future Holds If It Pushes Through
Regardless of a football match featuring Italy and Argentina in a match-up, the new Nations League was supposedly sealed in a Memorandum of Understanding between the UEFA and CONMEBOL effective until 2028. This idea will see mixed responses, where players in the UEFA and other Nations League member countries could be absent when they are needed by their club teams the most.
